A survey found that among RVers, a spouse is more likely to be accidentally left behind than the dog.

One of our leading RV insurers, The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies, surveyed more than 1,000 RVers countrywide to uncover amusing mishaps they’ve experienced while traveling.

The survey found that the most common blunders made while traveling are:

Driving away with the steps extended;

Backing into something;

Misjudging overhead or side clearance space;

Not connecting taillights correctly; and

Running out of gas.

The survey found that 53 percent of RVers spend a month or more each year traveling the open road, and 42 percent travel more than 500 miles per trip. Traveling the open road in an RV can be a great adventure, but sometimes it gets a little bumpy.

That’s why RVers were also asked about their insurance. When mishaps happen, you want to get back on the road fast—ideally with all of your passengers on board. Only 28 percent bought a stand-alone insurance policy with specialized RV coverages. In fact, 54 percent simply added their RV to their auto policy, and 14 percent didn’t buy any RV insurance.

Although mishaps can sometimes be funny, they can also lead to costly damages. Simply adding your RV to your auto policy can leave you woefully underprotected. It’s important to know what coverages are available to adequately protect yourself and your vehicle.

“There are huge differences in coverage and services from companies that specialize in RV insurance,” says Cathy Pelfrey, RV product manager at Progressive. “Check with Secure Protection Insurance Agency or do research online so that you buy the policy and coverages that are right for you.”

We can review your policy and possibly help you find a variety of illuminating ways to save money. Here are some things you may want to consider:

• Ask us to check several companies’ rates. This is the single most important thing you can do to get the best possible rate—and we can do it for you quickly and easily. The difference between the highest and lowest rate available to you from different companies could vary by hundreds of dollars.

• Reduce or drop physical damage coverage on an older car. Depending on your car’s age and where you live, comprehensive and collision coverage may not be worth keeping. We can give you advice on whether it makes sense to reduce or drop this coverage altogether.

• Raise your deductible. According to the Insurance Information Institute, raising your deductible from $200 to $500 could reduce your collision and comprehensive cost by 15 to 30 percent. In addition, because the average driver files a collision claim only once every ten years, odds are that over the lifetime of your car, a higher deductible will save you money. We can show you how raising your deductible will lower your premium.

• Look for discounts. Many insurance companies reduce premiums for certain driver traits or car features. For example: being a homeowner for more than three years, nonsmoker, nondrinker, students with good grades, senior citizens who have taken an approved defensive driving course, people who only drive for pleasure, cars kept in garages, antilock brakes, antitheft devices, air bags, etc. Ask us to check.

• Don’t assume having your car and home insured by the same company is the best option. Because auto insurance rates vary so much from company to company, it may make sense for you to have your car and home insured by separate companies. Let’s talk about it.

According to a new study by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, 25 percent of U.S. teens aged 16 to 17 who have cell phones admitted to texting while driving, and twice as many say they have been in the car with someone that has.

A new cell phone application, by Cell Cease, aims to limit this distraction. Cell Cease, which works exclusively on Windows phones, blocks calls and texts while a vehicle is in motion.

Distracted drivers are the cause of a reported 5,870 fatalities and 515,000 injuries in the past year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Texting has been found to be so dangerous, professional truck and bus drivers who "text and drive" can be subject to civil or criminal penalties of up to $2,750.

Although Cell Cease prohibits teen drivers from texting while driving, it allows them to send and receive calls from a list of approved numbers, which parents can control and modify using a PIN code. The application always allows emergency calls to and from 911.

One thing is easy to foretell: Unpredictable weather can cause reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions that make it challenging for even the most experienced drivers. Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself, your passengers and your car.

The following tips can help you stay safe when faced with treacherous roads:

Assemble a winter emergency kit. At a minimum, it should contain a blanket, boots, shovel, nonperishable food and a flashlight.

Plan ahead for stopping and turning. “Feather” the brakes when approaching a stop, especially if the road is slick. If turning, accelerate very gently through the turn.

Don’t make any sudden moves. Keep it slow and steady to maintain control.

Be cautious when braking in icy conditions. Coast over ice. Brake after reaching bare pavement. And never slam on the brakes. Brake gently in a pulsing fashion.

Steer into a skid. Remember: Locked wheels lead. If your rear tires are in a skid and “locked,” the rear of your car will start sliding to lead the car down the road. If this happens, steer into the skid, not away, and remember, don’t brake during a skid.

If you follow these tips but still find yourself in a crash, just remember that what you do after an accident can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe and in helping you and your insurance company work through a claim.

Remember to follow these tips from the experts at Secure Protection Insurance if you get into an accident:

Stay calm. Stay at the scene but move off the roadway. Warn oncoming traffic by activating your hazard warning lights and/or setting flares.

Call the police.

Contact your insurance company to file a claim. The earlier your insurance company knows about the accident, the earlier it can get to work to resolve it.

Do not admit fault. Only discuss the accident with the police and your claims representative.

Exchange information with the other driver(s). And remember to get contact information for any witnesses.

Understanding what coverages and service options are available is the first step toward making better, more informed decisions so that you and your business are properly protected. Here are some tips from the experts at Progressive (one of our many commercial auto insurance companies) to help you find the right coverage, service and price:

Know the company you’re dealing with—and its reputation for handling claims. Under-stand that you may pay more for “cheaper” coverage in the long run if the company lacks experience handling commercial auto claims. In business, vehicles need to be on the road—or you lose money. Insurance companies that don’t specialize in commercial auto coverage often don’t have their own claims representatives handling the process, so it may take longer to get vehicles back in service.

Look for discounts. Before initiating a quote for a policy, gather your company’s loss and financial records. This information could help you save a lot of money. You may qualify for discounts if you’ve carried increased liability limits in the past, if your employee base consists of experienced drivers or if your company’s credit rating is good.

Don’t let your coverage lapse. Proof of prior insurance is important, so never let your insurance policy lapse. If you do, you will most certainly pay more for your next policy.

Ask for referrals. Find out where colleagues in your business have found the best coverage and the best service. They may be able to refer you to an agent or com-any that really understands your business.

Check driving records before hiring. If they’ll be driving a company vehicle, be sure to screen the Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for every potential hire.

Update the value of your equipment. If you’ve added, upgraded or phased out equipment, you’ll want your policy to reflect the true value of your fleet. This ensures you have adequate coverage where you need it and that you’re not paying for cover-age you no longer need.

Check the options for managing your policy. See if you can handle routine tasks online and over the phone instead of having to visit an agency or mail in forms. It saves time—and in business, time is money.

Pet owners spend a whopping $40 billion on their furry friends each year. That’s enough to buy a gallon of gas for every man, woman and child in the United States … 44 times.

Insurance companies haven’t always viewed pets with the same passion as their owners. If you’re in an accident, generally everyone in the car - except your four-legged friend - is covered.

At least one of our companies now recognizes Fido and Fifi as family members. A Progressive policy with Collision coverage now extends to cats and dogs. The coverage pays up to $500 if your dog or cat is hurt or dies as a result of a car accident.

And, best of all, the coverage is free.

“We know how much our customers love their dogs and cats. Many of us have pets, too, and we feel the same way,” said Geoff Souser of Progressive. “Progressive has a long history of product and service innovations that prove you can teach an old dog new tricks. Knowing that most people think of their pets as family members, it felt like the right thing to do.”

Progressive’s pet injury coverage is available in most states. To find out more, contact Secure Protection Insurance at 972-437-1000.

635 and Greenville Avenue

Everyday I look out my window at 635 and Greenville avenue in Dallas, Texas and see thousands upon thousands of automobiles drive by. I wonder how many of these automobiles are not insured. Based on some estimates as many as 30% or so of the drivers do not have any insurance . . . not to mention the ones that are inadequately insured. As a matter of fact, in 2008 the state of Texas stepped up its efforts to clamp down on uninsured drivers.

What doe uninsured drivers mean for you? Well, if youn don't have the correct coverage on yourself and your vehicles, it could mean that you will have to come out of pocket quite a bit to have a vehicle or your body repaired if you are struck by an uninsured driver and it is their fault. Most imporantly, it means that you should discuss with an agent the appropriate level of coverage and make sure that you pay your premiums. You can visit Secure Protection Insurance or one of our sponsors on this page to have an agent (or agents) work on a quote for you. But, make sure that you ask them about all of your liability and other options, to make sure that you are adequately insured for auto insurance.

For many business owners, the road to success cannot be driven without company vehicles. They are a key component of the business’ continued operations and are essential to the company’s livelihood. And just as you’d never consider going on a job without all the necessary tools of your trade, you should never consider driving your business vehicle without the right insurance coverage. But finding the right commercial auto insurance company can be a tricky proposition. There are lots of companies offering commercial auto coverage, so it’s important that you select one that meets the needs of your business.

Of all the factors you’ll want to take into account, the company’s experience with commercial auto insurance and claims service will have the biggest impact on you and your business. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you consider different commercial auto insurance companies:

Do they have experience with your business type? How long has the company offered commercial auto coverages? Do they understand the insurance needs that are unique to your line of work? A carrier with commercial auto expertise ensures that you’ll get the right coverage for your business.

Do they excel in customer service? You need 24/7 service that is fast, accurate and focused on your bottom line. You also need the convenience of being able to handle your insurance business on nights and weekends, because you can’t count on having the time to deal with such matters during regular business hours.

Do they offer flexible, competitive products? Payment options? Insurance rates can vary a great deal from company to company, so you’ll want to compare. You want flexibility in the types of coverages—and also payment options. Monthly bill plans can help small-business owners maintain necessary cash flow.

Do they have a demonstrated record of claims experience? Keeping vehicle down-time to a minimum is vital to any business. Each minute a vehicle is out of commission affects your bot-tom line. Look for a company that’s known for efficient claims service and fast, fair resolution.

I know it's cold outside in Dallas. I know we just had record-breaking snow, but I also know that many of our are itching to get your bike out on the road. To steer this riding season in the right direction, you’ll want to make sure your motorcycle—and your motorcycle insurance policy—are in good working order before hitting the open road.

While you should always check your owner’s manual for specific guidelines, here are some general tips for getting ready:

1. Change the oil and filter. Many manufacturers recommend changing the oil and filter before storing a bike for any extended period of time and again when you bring it back out for riding season. Be sure to first start up the motor-cycle to warm the engine and then shut it off before changing the oil and filter.

2. Check the belt or chain. Make sure it is set to the manufacturer’s recommended tension. And if you have a chain, lubricate it.

3. Check nuts and bolts. Start off the riding season with a solid bike. Make sure everything is tight. “A well-maintained motorcycle not only assures a fun time, it can save you money by avoiding accidents, which helps to keep your insurance rates down,” says Rick Stern, motorcycle product manager, The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies.

4. Inspect tires. Look for any damage and also make sure each tire is inflated to the correct pres-sure. You’ve only got two tires, so for maximum stability it is very important to avoid underinflation as well as overinflation.

5. Look for fluid leaks. The easiest way to check for this is to look at the floor under the motor-cycle. Leaking oil or brake, radiator or clutch fluid can cause their own special problems. For example, being low on brake fluid could make it hard to stop your motor-cycle. You don’t want to find that out after you’re already on the road.

6. Check all lights. Make sure headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals are all functioning properly.

7. Brush up on your riding skills. Find a safe place to practice riding skills such as fast stops, figure eights, U-turns, etc., so you’re ready for the season. You’ll be glad you did.

8. Update your policy. Per-haps one of the most important things you can do at the start of the season is review your insurance coverage to be certain you, and your bike, are covered. Talk to your local independent insurance agent.

Secure Protection Insurance represents many companies and they can help you to understand the coverages you need. A Secure Protection independent insurance agent can also help you find the combination of price and service that’s right for you.

Did You Know?

To steer this riding season in the right direction, you’ll want to make sure your motorcycle— and your motorcycle insurance policy—are in good working order before hitting the open road.
Although this is the main rule, there are some exceptions. One of these exceptions is to get discounts on homeowners insurance.

Have You Filed claims the last couple of years?
If you haven't filed any claims for a couple of years or so, you might be able to save up to 15% on your premiums. Also, if you use the same insurance company for a couple of years, that will also look good and you can save really save big bucks.

Are You Really Protected?
Many companies will offer you a discount if you have things like burglar alarms or smoke detectors installed. You might also have one that is connected to a third party monitoring company. That will save you even more!

Why Not Receive Multiple Policies From The Same Company?
It might be a great solution to get it all together.. auto, home, recreational, travel and whatever other coverage you need to get under the same company .. you can save a lot. This can chop off a whopping 10-15% of your premium. All it takes is just a little bit of planning!

Know Where The Nearest Fire Station Is Located
There are a few things in terms of location that can alter your premiums. If you live far from a fire station or fire hydrant, you'll normally have to pay more. The opposite is the case if you live within the city limits; then you will pay less on your premiums, compared with living in a more rural area.

The Building Materials of Your House Can Impact Rates
What your house is made of will actually make a difference in how much you pay. For example, wood houses carry higher premiums than good, solid concrete or brick structures.

Higher Payments On The Deductible
If you can afford it, you should pay as much as possible on your deductible, thus your premium will be lower. If you are able to pay something like $200 or $1000, you can bring that premium down as much as 20%!

Stop Smoking!
Non-smokers will save cash; even as much as 15% in many cases. Check out if the company you use offers a deal for non-smokers. Smoking accidents account for more than 23,000 residential fires every year. Some insurers offer to reduce premiums if no one in the home smokes.

These are just a few pointers to help you save cash on your homeowners insurance. Remember, you should always consult your independent insurance agent for the right advice for your situation.

There is a very good chance that at this very moment you are paying too much for your car insurance. There is an even better chance that you could get a better rate, from another insurance company, than you could from your existing insurer. So why not take an hour or so and review your policy for savings? If you're fed up with the high insurance rates from your current company, shop around for a new one.

You can save on auto insurance in five ways:

1. Make sure you get all discounts for which you qualify

2. Keep a clean driving record

3. Adjust your coverage to assume more of the risk

4. Drive a car equipped with terrific safety features

5. Shop around for a good, low cost insurance provider

Discounts fall into a number of area’s:

· Low-risk occupations

· Professional organizations

· Combined coverage

· Discounts for safety features

· More risk assumed by driver

· Discounts for senior citizens

Low-Risk Occupations
Insurance is a numbers game. Adjustors collect information about what types of people get into accidents. Over the years they see a trend. companies are the same.

Professional Organizations and Auto Clubs
Have you ever been about to pay $100 for a hotel room, only to discover that a AAA discount saves you 15 percent? Now you're paying $85 and feeling proud of yourself. It's similar in the insurance business. Affiliation with AAA — and certain other professional organizations — will lower your rates.

Combined and Renewal Discounts
A big source of savings is to insure your cars with the same company that insures your house. Make sure you ask if combined coverage is available. This will lower your payments on your car insurance and make your homeowner's policy cheaper too. It's also important to make sure you are getting a "renewal" discount that many car insurance companies offer. This is a discount given to people who have been with the same insurance company for an extended period of time.

Discounts for Auto Safety Features
Heading the list of money saving safety features is antilock brakes. Automatic seatbelts and airbags are also frequently rewarded with insurance discounts.

Assume More Risk
Two powerful ways to bring your coverage down is to assume a higher risk. This is done in two ways. The most dramatic reduction can be realized by dropping your collision insurance on an older car. If the car is worth less than $2,000, you'll probably spend more insuring it than it is worth. The whole idea of driving an older car is to save money, so why not get what is coming to you?

Another way to redesign your policy — and save money in the process — is to ask for a higher deductible. The deductible is the amount of money you have to pay before your insurance company begins paying the rest. In other words, you pay for the little dings and bumps and let your insurance company pay for the heavy hits.

As a final note, if you are being strangled by high insurance costs, keep this in mind when you go car shopping next time. The more expensive and higher-performance the car is, the higher the premium will be. This is particularly true of cars that are frequently stolen, or are expensive to repair. The insurance company keeps this in mind when setting its insurance rates for this vehicle. Shop for a low-profile car and get your kicks in other ways. You'll love the savings you'll see on your auto insurance.

As always, speak to your independent insurance agent for a free, no hassle evaluation of what’s in your best interest.

AUSTIN – Texas weather can change quickly, especially in the winter. A fast-moving cold front can cause temperatures to drop below freezing within hours. Outdoor pipes, pipes in unheated areas, and pipes that run along uninsulated exterior walls can burst if the water in them freezes and expands. This can shatter pipe seals or the pipes themselves, sending water pouring through your house. You can avoid thousands of dollars of damage to your walls, ceilings, carpets, and furniture by taking a few simple measures to protect your home.

Before the Freeze

Protect faucets, outdoor pipes, and exposed pipes in unheated areas by wrapping them with rags, newspaper, trash bags, or plastic foam.

Insulate your outdoor water meter box and be sure its lid is on tight.

Cover any vents around your home’s foundation.

Drain and store water hoses indoors.

Protect outdoor electrical pumps.

Drain swimming pool circulation systems or keep the pump motor running. (Run the pump motor only in a short freeze. Running the motor for long periods could damage it.)

Drain water sprinkler supply lines.

Open the cabinets under sinks in your kitchen and bathrooms to allow heated indoor air to circulate around the water pipes.

Set your thermostat at a minimum temperature of 55 degrees, especially when you’re gone for the day or away for an extended period.

Let indoor faucets drip; it isn’t necessary to run a stream of water.

Make sure you know where your home’s shut-off valve is and how to turn it on and off.

If you leave town, consider turning off your water at the shut-off valve while faucets are running to drain your pipes. Make sure you turn the faucets off before you turn the shut-off valve back on.

If you drain your pipes, contact your electric or gas utility company for instructions on protecting your water heater.

If Your Pipes Freeze

If a pipe bursts and floods your home, turn the water off at the shut-off valve. Call a plumber for help if you can’t find the broken pipe or if it’s inaccessible. Don’t turn the water back on until the pipe has been repaired.

If the pipe hasn’t burst, thaw it out with an electric heating pad, hair dryer, portable space heater, or towel soaked with hot water. Apply heat by slowly moving the heat source toward the coldest spot on the pipe. Never concentrate heat in one spot because cracking ice can shatter a pipe. Turn the faucet on and let it run until the pipe is thawed and water pressure returns to normal.

Don’t use a blowtorch or other open-flame device. They are fire risks and carbon monoxide exposure risks.

If You Have a Loss

Contact your insurance agent or company promptly. Follow up as soon as possible with a written claim to protect your rights under Texas’ prompt-payment law.

Review your coverage. Most homeowners and renters policies pay for property repair. In addition, most policies pay for debris removal and for additional living expenses if you have to move temporarily because of damage to your home. If you can’t find your policy, ask your agent or company for a copy.

Homeowners policies may require you to make temporary repairs to protect your property from further damage. Your policy covers the cost of these repairs. Keep all receipts and damaged property for the adjuster to inspect. If possible, take photos or videos of the damage before making repairs. Don’t make permanent repairs. An insurance company may deny a claim if you make permanent repairs before an adjuster inspects the damage.

Most homeowners policies do not cover loss caused by freezing pipes while your house is unoccupied unless you used reasonable care to maintain heat in the building; shut off the water supply; and drain water from plumbing, heating, and air conditioning systems.

Motorcycles and boats are often significant investments, and the right insurance policy can help protect them. Here are a few tips, courtesy of Secure Protection Insurance.

· Evaluate your specific needs. Insuring a boat or a motorcycle is different than insuring your car or home. A specialized motorcycle policy, for instance, can provide coverage for custom paint jobs and aftermarket equipment that might not be covered if the bike were just added to a generic auto policy.

· Similarly, a specialized boat policy could cover things like the cost to replace lost or damaged fishing gear and costly services such as emergency on-water towing and fuel-spill cleanup. You probably wouldn’t get this coverage by adding a boat to a homeowner’s policy.

· Consult with an independent agency – like Secure Protection Insurance. Unlike “captive” agents who represent only one company, independent insurance agents and brokers are licensed insurance professionals who represent several companies. They can offer you a variety of coverages, review and evaluate your policies, suggest new coverage options that meet your changing needs and answer your questions.

“An independent insurance agent or broker can make sure you have the specialized coverage you need to protect your boat or bike,” said Jim Lloyd, of the Progressive Group of Insurance Companies. “Some insurance companies provide only bare-bones protection for your boat or motorcycle by simply adding it onto your existing auto or homeowner’s policy, but independent agents and brokers can review and evaluate your needs to help match you with the company that will provide you with the combination of specialized coverage, service and price that’s best for you.”

Drive Safely-Help Lower Insurance Rates

Stay Alive, Just Drive

Like most drivers, you probably live out of your car as you shuttle between work, school and home. Your car is your dressing room, your nightlife on wheels, your restaurant, and at times your quiet space away from it all.

But, unfortunately, as many drivers discover each year, driving is a task that requires your undivided attention, especially those young or inexperienced drivers. Fact is, drivers between the ages of 16 to 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to be involved in car accidents. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety stats still list car crashes as the leading cause of death for teen drivers and attribute this to driver inexperience and immature behavior (i.e. tailgating, speeding, etc.). Throw multitasking in the mix and you're asking for trouble.

The following are driving distractions you may be familiar with and ways you can maintain focus when driving:

1. Cell phone use: Regardless of whether you have a headset, save that phone conversation for later, preferably when you're stopped or, even better, out of the car. Turns out, conversing is a bigger distraction than messing with a phone or headset. But if you just have to take the call, tell the person on the other end that you're on the road and will call them back.

2. Text and go: Texting is one of the best ways to communicate: instant gratification without disturbing others. But typing while you're driving? Horrible idea — you only have two hands, and they're better off on the steering wheel. Save this for when you can safely compose a note. If you can say it in a text, it can wait until you're parked.

3. Playing Radio DJ: There's nothing like driving to your favorite songs. But that split-second you change a CD or switch to a different radio station is just enough time for an accident to occur. To prevent this, invest in a CD changer with your albums of choice at the ready. Program your favorite radio stations into the presets so you don't have to use the "Seek" or "Tune" buttons to scroll through them. If you have an iPod and your car is equipped with an auxiliary input, create a playlist of favorite tunes so you're not scrolling through the menus as you drive.

4. Chatting with friends: Research has shown that young drivers with young passengers tend to have more accidents than those driving alone, Makes sense, since there's nothing like a friend to say something that gets you to take your eyes off the road. And while no one wants to be the car disciplinarian, when you're behind the wheel, it's OK to say, "hush up, I'm driving."

5. Feeling the tunes: We’re all guilty of blasting tunes in the car to accompany singing and super-cool chair-dancing moves. Unfortunately, car karaoke can put you in danger since you can’t hear the horns of other motorists or emergency vehicle siren. Instead, save that earth-pounding bass for your home. Enjoy your in-car tunes at a reasonable level since you need to hear, as well as see while driving.

6. Drive-thru take out: Sometimes you have limited time to enjoy a meal so it's another visit to the drive-thru. But instead of juggling your soda with your fries with your burger, wait until you're parked before you chow down. It's hard to give the road the attention it needs when you're focused on eating.

7. Fidgeting with the knobs: It's only natural to tune-in your situation while on the road, but spend too much time messing with various car controls could be dangerous. If you want to turn down the thermostat, turn on cruise control or hit the re-circulating button while behind the wheel? Also, memorize your control center beforehand so that you can program functions without intently staring at the dash.

8. Primping on the road: You may think you're saving time by putting on makeup or brushing your hair while you drive. But what you could be doing is setting yourself up for a costly lesson in distracted driving. All it takes is a split second while you look in the mirror for a wreck to happen. Simply wait until you get to your destination before you make those final, awe-inspiring appearance adjustments.

9. Road rage: Sometimes a long drive seems to be the right thing to ease your nerves. Actually, it could be the worst thing to do when you're angry. Driving angry is like driving intoxicated. Your judgment is off, you're probably amped up and don't realize your speeding. To prevent an ugly situation, stay away from anything with wheels until are calmed down.

10. Lost in the directions: Reading maps or printed directions with one hand on the wheel is risky business. Instead, map out your location and get an idea of where you're heading before you get in your car. Map sites like Google Maps and MapQuest make getting lost a thing of the past by giving you turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Or, buy a GPS device which gives you verbal commands, reducing your need to view a map or diagram.

Do you travel with your dog or cat when RVing? Is your pet more than a companion? Is he or she a member of your family? You’re not alone. Most of the 8 million RVers, according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, bring pets along on trips. If this includes you, great news! Pet injury coverage from Progressive protects your furry four-legged friends in the event of an accident.

In the past, RV insurance policies cover the people ... but not the pets … inside RVs. Not any more. Secure Protection Insurance through one or more of our insurance companies offers free pet injury coverage with collision and comprehensive coverage and pays up to $500 if your dog or cat is hurt or dies because of a crash, fire or flood.

“RVing is more fun when the entire family, including pets, is along for the ride,” said Cathy Pelfrey of Progressive. “This coverage gives pet owners something no other RV insurer offers – peace of mind from knowing that their dogs and cats are protected, too.”

In fact, one of our insurance companies, Progressive, was the first insurer to introduce pet injury protection to its car insurance customers. For more information about RV Insurance, please contact one of our agents at www.spinstx.com or 972-437-1000.
Anyone who is currently on active duty should find out from their insurance agent if they have any kind of discount program in place for men and women who are in the military. Many automobile insurance companies will offer discounts to anyone who is military personnel, whether active or retired.

There are some insurance companies who will agree to let you drop all of the coverage you have and just keep the comprehensive if you find out you have to go overseas with the military and you will be storing your car, which means no one will be using it while you are gone. In addition, if you will be shipped to a country where the government gives you hostile fire pay, occasionally an insurance company will discount the amount you must pay for your comprehensive policy by as much as 25% as long as it stays in storage.

If you know you will be overseas for 30 days or more, and will be storing your car for at least that long, you can find insurance companies that will reduce the amount of your coverage, or suspend it altogether as a temporary fix. This can save you quite a lot of money, and also lets your insurance record show that you have kept continuous coverage. Insurance companies prefer to see this, as they tend to prefer customers who have a record of a policy that has not been interrupted for any reason. Generally, a record with gaps of time in it can get you labeled as someone who is “high risk” as far as the insurance company is concerned, and this makes your premium cost more.

You should notify your insurance agent the moment you find out that you are going to be deployed so that you can discuss what should be done about your policy while you are gone. If you should forget, and your policy is canceled for lack of payment, don’t just assume you can explain the matter and get it back when you return home. You might have trouble getting a policy with the company at all. If by chance they do decide to let you have one, you can expect to pay a much higher price than you were paying before. Don’t let this happen! Talk to your agent and give him or her all the details of your deployment so that you can keep your insurance at a low rate while you are gone.

One way to avoid sticker shock or buyer’s remorse when purchasing a new car in Dallas is to consider expenses you may encounter down the road.

For instance, experts say that while most people anticipate the purchase price, taxes and registration fees associated with a vehicle, many forget that the insurance they need to protect their vehicle could come with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, there are ways to keep insurance costs down while maintaining the type and amount of coverage a new car typically requires.

To help consumers control car costs—from sticker price to insurance premiums—The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies offers these tips:

Decide ahead of time how much money you can spend and what type of vehicle best suits your needs.

Research crash test and acci-dent data. You can see crash test video and analysis from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety online at progressive.com.

Check with several dealerships and get firm quotes in writing. Having quotes from several places can help you negotiate your best deal.

Shop around for financing. Rates vary between institutions.

Insurance Costs

Before you buy a car, you should check into how much it would cost to insure. Try talking with a representative from Secure Protection Insurance in Dallas—it may save you some money. Unlike “captive” agents who represent only one company, Secure Protection Insurance offers products from many different insurance companies. That means more choice and more opportunities for you to find the best coverage and service at the right price.

Here are a few questions to ask an independent agent or broker.

Can I get any discounts for my car’s safety features? Your auto insurance premium is based in part on the car’s value, the cost to repair it, its overall safety record and the likelihood of theft. Many insurers offer discounts for safety features that reduce the risk of injuries or theft.

How does this insurance company handle claims? Price isn’t the only factor to consider. It’s a good idea to deal with a company that will be there for you when you need it around the clock.

What coverage do I need? Your specific needs may vary by the age of the car, your personal situation and other factors.

Summer is over, and you’ve taken your boat out of the water. To save a few dollars, you cancel your boat insurance. After all, what could possibly happen to your baby while it's hibernating?

A lot, according to Progressive:

“You'd be shocked at the number of claims filed in colder months," says Dominic Mediate of Progressive. "Nearly two out of every 10 Progressive boat claims filed in northern states happen between Labor Day and Memorial Day."

Don’t take a gamble on nothing bad happening. Common off-season claims include:

Fire, theft, vandalism and flooding

Most claims are filed for one of these reasons, which can occur anytime of year. Without coverage, boats damaged by fire, theft, vandalism or flooding aren’t protected.

Injuries that occur on or around your boat

Some boaters don’t realize they could be responsible for injuries that occur on or around their boat — even if the injured person was there illegally. Without liability coverage, you could be responsible for the damages or the injured person’s medical bills.

Keeping your policy all year round might also save you a few bucks.

For example, we have a company with disappearing deductibles reduce your Comprehensive and Collision deductible 25 percent for every claim-free policy period. Four policy periods in a row without a claim equals a $0 deductible. Canceling your policy could mean paying more or the entire deductible, generally $500 or $1,000.

TexasSure Auto Insurance Database Launches Letter Campaign

December 8, 2009 - Letter Campaign Begins

AUSTIN –TexasSure, the statewide database that provides law enforcement with another tool to confirm whether a Texas registered passenger vehicle has valid auto liability insurance, recently began a new phase in which customers with insurance who can't be matched are contacted to help resolve the matching issue.

TexasSure has been available to all 254 county Tax Assessor-Collectors since June 2008 and to Texas law enforcement since October 2008. The database is able to match over 99% of all reported auto insurance policies to a registered vehicle. The purpose of the letter campaign is to contact the less than 1% of insured customers who can’t be matched in the database matching process. Mailing of the one-page letters, in both English and Spanish, began at the end of November 2009 to approximately 100,000 Texas drivers.

Reasons that an insured vehicle may not match to a registered vehicle include:

The insurance company does not have accurate information

The vehicle registration is expired, or the information is not current

The vehicle is not registered in Texas

The vehicle was recently sold and the insurer was not notified

Letters will only be sent to customers that have been unmatched for at least 60 days, to allow time for any recent changes to vehicle registration information. Customers will be provided with the insurance information on file and specific guidance to help them determine the reason for the non-match. Customers may respond by mail, website, or phone. While there is no penalty for not responding, insured customers who are not accurately reflected in the TexasSure data may be inconvenienced by this inaccuracy. A call center will be available to assist customers who receive letters.

In the spring, TexasSure expects to begin a second phase letter campaign, sending notices to owners of registered vehicles that appear to be uninsured.

The TexasSure Vehicle Insurance Verification program was created by Senate Bill 1670, 79th Texas Legislature, and is designed to reduce the number of uninsured motorists in the state. According to the TexasSure database, as of 11/23/2009, 22% of registered passenger vehicles in Texas were not matched to an insurance policy. This statewide average varied by region; a county-level breakdown is attached.

More information about the program can be found at www.TexasSure.com, or by calling TDI's Consumer Help Line at 1-800-252-3439.

One of the best tools a business can use to protect its assets is commercial auto insurance.

Understanding insurance can be tricky. One of the first steps toward making an informed decision is to understand coverage and service options. Here are three easy steps to help figure out your commercial auto insurance needs:

1. Choose an insurer with the right combination of price and service. Insurance isn’t just about price. It’s about service, too. How are claims handled? How long will it take to get your vehicle back on the road? Can you get questions answered outside of business hours or online? Know the answers to these questions. Your time is money.

2. Research your policy options. Having the right coverage is important. A standard commercial auto policy generally includes coverage for:

    •injuries or damage that you cause;

    •your driver’s injuries;

•injuries and damages caused by uninsured or underinsured drivers; and

•damage to or theft of your vehicle(s).

When it comes to damage that you cause, you may be required to purchase certain limits based on who you work for. For instance, if you work for certain home builders, you may be required to carry $1 million in liability limits. Consider how much you are willing to pay out of pocket if your liability in an accident is more than your policy limits.

3. Know how the policy is priced. You can control your insurance costs. To get the best rates, run motor vehicle reports on potential drivers. If you let your insurance lapse, you’ll probably pay more for your next policy. Ask about discounts, including paid-in-full and renewal discounts.

Just like your customers rely on your professional skills, call a professional independent insurance agent who will be in your corner, researching and recommending the best options.

“Commercial auto insurance is complicated, but it is vital to protecting your livelihood,” says Bill Kampf with The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies, one of the largest commercial auto insurers in the country.

(NAPS)—Understanding insurance can often be like trying to learn a foreign language. Many find it confusing and intimidating. Fortunately, there’s help. Here is a quick reference designed to help you understand some of the most common kinds of coverages. The reference was put together by The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies.

Liability covers bodily injury and property damage (BI/PD). This covers your legal liability, up to the dollar limits you select, for damages caused to others in a covered vehicle accident. In most states today, liability insurance is mandatory.

Under BI/PD, your insurance company pays for damages to an injured person and for property damage that you are legally obligated to pay as a result of an accident. If your policy covers you in the event you’re sued after an accident, your insurance company will pay for a lawyer to defend you.

Liability limits generally appear as three numbers, for example, 25/50/25 or 100/300/100. The first number refers to the maximum amount, in thousands, that your insurance company is obligated to pay for bodily injury per person. The second number is the maxi-mum that would be paid out for bodily injury per claim and the third number represents the maxi-mum amount your insurance company is obligated to pay for property damage you cause.

Collision. When you buy collision coverage, your insurance company pays for damages if your vehicle collides with another vehicle or object. Collision coverage involves a deductible amount you select when you purchase your policy. This amount is what you are required to pay before your insurance company starts picking up the tab. Remember, the deductible amount is the amount you need to pay in the event of a claim.

Comprehensive covers dam-age caused by events other than a car collision—such as fire, theft, vandalism, hail or flood. It also covers damage caused by your vehicle colliding with an animal. And if your car is stolen, it will cover the cost of a rental, subject to a daily limit. Like collision coverage, a deductible usually applies.

Medical Coverage. Depending on the state in which you live, you may have available to you Medical Payments coverage or Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. While these both work differently, they provide coverage for medical care provided to you as a result of a car accident.

Did You Know?

Liability insurance is for bodily injury and property damage. This covers your legal liability, up to the dollar limits you select, for damages caused to others in a covered vehicle accident. In most states today, liability insurance is
mandatory. To find an agent to help you learn more about car insurance, go to www.spinstx.com.

Using the right tool for a job is key to success in any profession. Experts say the same principle applies when selecting an auto insurance policy. Having the right type of policy can help ensure that you, your employees and your business are all protected in the unfortunate event that one of your vehicles is involved in an accident.

If you’re a business owner and you or your employees use a vehicle for business-related deliveries or to carry certain materials to and from a job site, you may need a commercial auto insurance policy that’s tailored to more closely suit the needs—and risks—of a business vehicle operator.

Here are some questions that can help you determine if you might need a commercial auto policy instead of a personal auto policy, courtesy of Secure Protection Insurance Agency:

• Do you need more liability coverage than your personal auto policy provides? Generally, a commercial auto policy provides higher limits of liability, but less or no coverage in areas that are typically not associated with commercial auto risks.

• Do you need special coverage for situations associated with con-ducting business? Commercial auto policies also usually offer certain coverages—such as hired and non-owned auto coverage and coverage for towing a trailer for business use—that are not available with personal auto policies.

• Do you need to list any employees as drivers? You can do this with a commercial auto insurance policy.

• Do you use your vehicle for business purposes? If you use your vehicle for things like pizza or newspaper delivery, catering, door-to-door consulting service, landscaping or snowplowing service, logging business, day care/church retreat van service and/or farm-to-market delivery, you might need a commercial auto policy.

GREAT ARTICLE FROM PROGRESSIVE ABOUT THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF AGENTS AVAILABLE!!

(NAPS)—To get the best deal on insurance, many people consult an insurance agent or broker. But did you know that there are different kinds of insurance agents and brokers—and the one you choose can make a big difference in the type of service you get and the choices you’re offered?

Here’s the difference:

Captive agents and brokers. Captive agents work with a specific insurance company, and as part of their business agreement with that company, they can offer only that company’s insurance products. They may also be required to sell other products from that company, such as annuities and investment plans.

Independent agents and brokers. Independent agents and brokers can offer products from many insurance companies. This helps them better serve your interests, as they can review multiple options to find a policy and rate that’s right for you. Insurance rates vary from company to company. Independent agents can put together a customized insurance plan.

If you’re ready to contact an independent agent to talk about saving money on car insurance, here are a few things to consider:

Has your life situation changed recently? Many factors determine auto insurance rates, not just vehicle year, make, model, body type and engine size. If you’ve recently moved, gotten married, had a birthday or experienced a similar life milestone, mention this to an independent agent or broker. You may be eligible to save money on your car insurance.

Is your car getting older? You don’t always need the same level of physical damage coverage on older cars as on newer ones. If you drive an older car, an independent agent or broker can advise you on what level of cover-age makes the most sense. Raising your deductible could save you money each year, too.

Do you have another type of vehicle that also needs coverage? If you have a motorcycle, boat, RV or other “toy,” you might save money by having it covered by the same company that insures your car. Talk to an independent agent or broker about it.

Another plus to working with an independent agent or broker is their ability to offer guidance for all your insurance needs—auto, home, life, business and more. They can customize a package of policies just for you.

Did You Know?

Unlike captive agents, independent agents and brokers can offer products from many insurance companies. This helps them better serve your interests, as they can review multiple options to find a policy and rate that’s right for you. As we move toward the Christmas Holidays, it is important to remember that your auto and homeowners insurance need to stay current. If you make monthly payments, and you opt not to make one of our payments, you could be opening yourself up to more fees and costs that you had hoped for. You could incur court costs, vehicle towing costs, new fees, etc. Make sure you have a safe holiday season, and make sure you keep your insurance current.
5 things never to say to your insurers

Some words are red flags to insurers and using them could mean that your claim might be delayed or even denied.

1. "I think ..."

Never begin a statement regarding a claim with these words. If you aren't sure, don't guess. What you say could cause your claim to be delayed or denied, says attorney Vedica Puri. And if you're wrong -- say, you report driving at 30 miles per hour before an accident but police later prove you were going 50 -- it could hurt your credibility.

Particularly beware of speculating on blame or causation. For example, if you suggest that a water leak is due to a construction defect, you could give the insurer an out if that's a policy exclusion.

Stick to the facts. Should the insurance rep ask you a question you can't answer, simply say, "I don't know." If the person is taking a written or recorded statement, ask for a transcript to review for misstatements.

2. "I got whiplash"

Fraud costs auto insurers up to $6.8 billion a year, reports the Insurance Research Council. And suing for damages caused by whiplash is a fraudster favorite ("Oh, my neck!"). Merely mentioning the term is likely to get your claim flagged for further investigation, says Amy Danise of Insure.com.

Whiplash is a specific diagnosis. If a doctor says that you have it, then you should report it as such. Other wise, if you feel neck pain, just refer to it that way.

3. "It's an experimental treatment"

Truly experimental or investigational medical procedures are typically not eligible for health insurance coverage. So if a doctor tells you he wants to experiment with a treatment, don't represent it using those words. "In medical terms it may not actually be experimental or investigational," explains Danise. "If it's proven effective, your doctor deems it medically necessary, and it's not an exclusion, it should be covered." Verify with your doctor that it meets the above litmus tests before going to the insurer.

4. "My basement flooded"

With homeowners insurance, "flood" is a red flag. "The word refers to an act of weather or an overflow from a nearby body of water," says Danise. "And a standard homeowners policy doesn't cover it. You'd need flood insurance."

So don't use the f-word if your basement is knee-deep in water because of a burst pipe. Damages from such an incident should be covered by a homeowners policy. But calling it a "flood" could muddy the waters, so to speak.

5. "Just send me a check"

When filing a home or auto claim, don't emphasize that you're just looking for the cash.

"If you were to say, 'I don't care about the roof leak, I just need the money,' that admission could slow things to a halt," says Puri. Technically, you're supposed to use the payout to make the repair for which you filed. While it's true that most insurance companies aren't going to check up on you, you'll certainly raise the fraud unit's suspicions if you imply that you won't. And then you might lose out on the money altogether.

PACKAGE YOUR COVERAGES TOGETHER: Many of our companies offer significant discounts if you package your homeowners and auto insurance together. If you rent, or own your home, you should let us quote your insurance as a package deal to see how we can reduce your insurance costs.

REMOVE SOME OF YOUR COVERAGES: This is not generally recommended without an extensive review of your insurance needs and you should consult one of our agents before you make this type of decision.

DRIVE SAFELY: Most companies will offer discounts, or will not uprate your policy if you have a clean driving record and you have avoided accidents for a specifiec period of time. Of course, no one is perfect, but by being a safer driver, you have an opportunity to reduce your insurance costs.

Give us a call at 972-437-1000 and we can review your current coverages and provide you with a free quote to make sure you are not paying too much for your insurance.
